The Masterpiece of You
We are each a masterpiece, carefully crafted across generations. Every aspect of who we are, our talents, perspectives, and unique combination of traits, has been assembled through an intricate process that spans our entire family lineage. Sometimes people from opposite corners of the world have been brought together, their distinct gifts converging to create something unprecedented called you. This is why each human being stands alone as irreplaceable and unrepeatable.
The Wrong Game, The Right Player
During my years in professional tennis, I had the privilege of witnessing greatness across multiple sports. I watched Dwyane Wade dominate the basketball court, Ronaldinho dance with a soccer ball, Usain Bolt blur across the track, and Roger Federer paint masterpieces with his racket.
Imagine for a moment if we switched their roles. Federer attempting to guard LeBron James, Bolt trying to bend free kicks like Ronaldinho, or Wade sprinting for Olympic gold. While their athletic gifts might allow them to perform adequately, something essential would be missing. They would work harder yet feel more awkward, like forcing a square peg into a round hole. They would be good, but never great in that effortless flow that defines mastery. This is exactly how most of us live every day. Playing a game that our lives were never created for.
Discovery, Not Renovation
Our journey should be one of uncovering, not constant renovation. When we focus on changing ourselves to fit external expectations, those changes feel forced and rarely last. We exhaust ourselves trying to maintain a version of ourselves that is not authentic, like wearing clothes that do not fit.
The alternative is approaching life with curiosity and embarking on a path of discovery where change happens naturally as we reveal new aspects of who we truly are. These discoveries do not feel foreign because they are not additions to our character; they are the natural expression of who we were always meant to be.
Your Unique Blueprint
There are no illegitimate children, only illegitimate parents. You were born with intention. You were not a mistake, but a carefully chosen blessing to a need that exists somewhere in the world.
The evidence surrounds us. Your DNA is so unique that it revolutionized criminal justice and paternity testing. In the scientific world, DNA stands for deoxyribonucleic acid. But perhaps for the rest of us, it should mean something simpler and more profound like
Do Not Alter
Do not alter who you are. Do not alter who you were created to be. Do not alter yourself by trying to become someone else. Instead, fall in love with your authentic self and embrace the curiosity to keep discovering the wonderful, unique things about you that have yet to be revealed.
When Time Stops
In the film Chariots of Fire, the runner Eric Liddell tells his sister that God made him fast, and when he runs, he feels God's pleasure. Not to run, he explains, would be holding God in contempt.
What makes time stop for you? What activity draws you so completely into the present that you lose all sense of everything else? What are you avoiding that, when you finally engage with it, makes you feel like you are doing something only you can do in this world?
When you feel these things, you are close to discovering your purpose, even if what you are doing seems like just a hobby or spare-time activity right now.
The Question That Changes Everything
Everything made has a reason for existing. A car serves transportation. A pen enables communication. Every object, no matter how simple, exists with specific purpose and design.
If a car and a pen, objects far less significant than you, have clear reasons for being here, what does that say about your presence in this world?
The answer to that question may be one of most important discoveries you will ever make.
